Storage Tips

  • When storing electronics, remove the batteries so they don’t corrode.
  • Keep heat and humidity sensitive items to the middle of the unit.
  • Wrap the wooden legs of furniture in a piece of cardboard and secure with packing tape to keep it from getting
    scratched while moving and storing.
  • Place upholstered furniture on a pallet, cardboard, or plastic sheet to keep moisture away.
  • Put a bag of cedar chips in your unit to keep away unwanted insects.
  • Give your wood furniture a good polish before storing. It keeps the dust from eating at the clear coat.
  • Try to use boxes that are the same dimensions for the best way to utilize space and they stack easier too.
  • Leave a space between the walls of the unit and your contents. If the air circulates you are less likely to have
    warped items or mildew.
  • Pack books flat, not standing on end. This will protect the spines, which will bend and warp over time if packed standing
upright. Books are very heavy, so pack them in small boxes and don’t put them in boxes with other more fragile items.
  • Cover stuffed furniture with dust cover to protect against dust and insects.
  • If you will be visiting your storage unit frequently, allow for walk-ways for easy access.
  • Do not store food items which could attract rodents or pests.
  • Store large pieces of furniture vertically to save space. Cushions should be wrapped and placed on top.
  • Mattresses are best stored on the long end and should be ideally raised above floor level or laid on protective sheeting.
Be sure to securely prop them up so they stand straight to avoid them bending out of shape or becoming lumpy.
  • Store your largest items first.
  • Try to place heaviest boxes at the bottom when stacking boxes.
  • Try not to lean items against exterior walls that may sweat.
  • Assess what items you may need access to and keep them at the front of the unit.
  • Shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses can be bundled together with shrink/stretch wrap or stored together in empty trash cans.
Stack extra cans inside one another. Do not store brooms or brushes resting on their bristles.
  • Due to our dry climate, when storing wooden furniture it is not a bad idea to place a bucket of water in the storage unit
    to prevent excessive drying.
